What modes would you make on the mim? I have one with a maple neck.
What would be the most important modification to make first?

I've had mine for almost 5 years, and all I've done is change strings, rub some lemon oil on the fretboard, and adjust the action & intonation. I'm happy with it as is. Sometimes I think about upgrading the pickups. But then I really listen to it. Then I don't want to change anything. Position 2 is especially sweet.

not that it's really necessary to do anything other than set-up/maintain these guitars, my experience is that it could probably benefit from some good hum-cancelling, via whichever path you choose. i've read some good things about doing the foil-in-the-cavity-thang. me, i'm thinking about finding some noiseless passive pickups for mine. it's my pet peeve whenever i put down my humbucker-equipped guitar and pick up the strat. love the strat tone - hate the noise.

I just did this for my MIM strat and WOW. The treble strings just ring now.

As everybody else has noted, it really matters what you want out of it.
Here's a list of what I've done to mine:
Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's pickups all new pots, jack and switch
Grover locking tuners
If you dig the sound you're getting out of it, don't worry about what everyone else is doing to theirs. I wanted a bit more vintage vibe, but with some extra bite, so I swapped the pickups out for Fat 50's (of course,
I've also had various Duncan, Dimarzio, and EMG pickups in there). As for the tuners, they're by far the best improvement I've made to it.
