Has anyone here built a tube-based overdrive pedal? I want to warm up a bass just a little bit, and have heard that the tubeworks Blue Tube pedal works excellently for this purpose.

I've been checking into the Real Tube by Tubeworks for guitar and the Tube
Driver. I just ordered an old Chandler/B.K. Butler Tube Driver from a dealer friend. The big mod for these pedals, probably also for the Blue Tube, is to swap out the 12AX7 tube and replace with a 12AU7. This is supposed to really improve the tone and smooth out the overdrive. I just picked up some 12AU7's that I'll be trying in my Tube Driver. You may find that using that tube, in place of the 12AX7, will give you what you're looking for, if you're just looking to warm up a bit.

Thanks for the info Lars! I did a google search and found the info for building the Real Mctube, also found a ton of links to other great sites for building pedals. Man, just a few short years ago when I started building amps, there was hardly any info available, I literally had to piece together bits and pieces of info from here and there to learn. Nowadays, I have information overload! There's so much good information out there, I don't think I'll ever get to it all!

Well, I have the parts laying around (ripped from some old organs and stereos). I am going to build an amp eventually, and thought that making a tube pedal would be a nice intro. I have made my own guitar, speaker cabinets, and solid-state effects pedals, so why not make a tube pedal?
The reason why I asked about the Blue Tube is that all the tube-based pedals on the market are made for guitar, and I want to use them for bass. I wanted to know how well it seems to work to get a gauge for how much I would have to change it to use it for bass.

I had a Real Tube pedal. I swapped the 12AX7 for a new Electro
Harmonix 12AU7, and it *DID* sound a lot better- warmer, creamier, bluesier.
However, the funny thing about this pedal was that it sounded great in front of my old Lab Series L7 amp (solid state), but sounded dull and flabby in front of my silverface Fender Pro Reverb (tube amp).
Somehow, putting it before a tube preamp made it lose all of it's character. I have no idea why.

Have you ever observed that we pay much more attention to a wise passage when it is quoted than when we read it in the original author?
