I was under the impression that Tele necks and Strat necks are more or less interchangable yes? no?
I've got a cheap Squire Strat in need of a replcement neck and I'm trying to figure out what my options are for a cheap replacement.

The end of the Tele neck is squared off and the end of the Strat's is rounded.
A Tele neck can be bolted on, but will leave a fairly ugly gap.

Sure, it's been done. Somewhere, I've got a picture of Jimi Hendrix playing a Strat with a Tele neck.
Check eBay too.

Sounds enticing, but it also sounds like it would cost more than I'm looking to spend on this thing. I pulled it out of the trash along with some other stuff that had been damaged when a local music store was flooded. I sort of promised myself that I wouldn't let this dumpster diving experience turn into a reason to spend money on equipment. I'll be looking around to see whether I can find something for around $20 somewhere. Based on looking at eBay auctions I'll probably be looking for a long time.

There's a mutt. Completely agree on the string lengths. For the first year or so after my first Strat, I went insanely nuts with crazy low string bends
BWaaaaaoooooooo.
And keeper of a very interesting parts bin.

How's this for a Tele-Strat Frankenstine.
http://timeelect.com/g-mod01.htm
If you are interested, I have a Black Walnut Tele neck with an ebony fingerboard.
I can send you pictures of it if you like.
It NEVER had been screwed to a body.
It IS an NOS Fender Neck.

Hehehe.... I'm looking forward to that. Good luck with this project. Do you use a manual or according to which specifications are you building this?

Hey there, new to this forum but thought I'd throw my experience in the mix.
My main guitar is Squire Strat with a '72 reissue Telecaster Custom neck. I loved the neck on the tele, and the sonic options on the strat so I did the frankenstein thing with the two.
here is a pic:
I did take a grinder to the end of the neck so that it would fit in the pocket, but it took all of two minutes.
Plays beautifully, sounds great.

Thanks for the welcome and the complement!
I really dig the sound and feel of this strat. The Squire body is a little bit thinner than a standard Fender, so it isn't as heavy on the shoulder. I guess the jury is still out on wither or not that favorably affects the sustain. I don't have any complaints though.
The big U-shaped neck fits my hand perfectly and I don't mind the sharper (7.25 I think) radius of the fretboard. I bend my notes quite a bit and I've never had any strings fret-out.
The stock pick-ups lack a little in the character department, but that's an easy fix. Even if I don't get around to swaping them out I doubt I'll be at a loss for Jones'n Tones.
check out myspace.com/wahkings to hear some songs where I use this guitar

I heard it - sounds magnificent (at least what you put up on myspace) Good thing this custom-mode. I am really impressed by those sounds. I am not kidding you

Hey, thanks for the kind words. Like I said the character of the pickups could use a little improvement, but the guitar definitely gets me from point A to point B.

Strat and tele necks are definitely different, and there are two ways you can accommodate this when using a tele neck on a strat: Square off the Strat's neck pocket, OR... Round off the Tele Neck. In either case, the depth of the neck pocket or neck slab should remain at 3" so you shouldn't have intonation trouble. I've attached a pic of my Franken-Strat with a Tele neck. My body has a squared neck pocket. There is a problem, however, with putting a Strat neck on a Tele: if you round the Tele pocket or square the Strat neck, you change the scale length and your intonation will be shot.

Hello Gigginpig, welcome to the forum
Thank you ever so much for this information. Not only the thread initiator will be helped by it but also (I assume many) others who are looking into doing something like this.

I just put a 65 Tele neck on a modded Mex Strat body tonight and I swear, the guitar is sooooo beautiful sounding I can't stand it!!!!!
I made no modifications to the neck or pocket and just bolted it in. Set the string height and set up the rest of the action, tuned it and checked intonation, all were perfect. I have spent the last 6 hours locked in the woodshed playing my new favorite gitfiddle.
Great sustain, moody & dark lows, great ring off the high end.
Just wanted to share as this is such a blessing for me. I tend to be a difficult player on my instruments and this looks like a serious keeper.

Read your post. How did you get away without making changes to the neck or body? I have an old mex strat and would prefer to bolt on a new neck to it rather than have it refreted. I am very partial to the telecasters neck. The pick ups are totaly corroded and I thought of replacing them with a set of David Gilmours replacement that are sold on musician friend for $250. Boris
