How do you read string gauges? When someone says, "I use 10s on my guitar" are they referring the gauge of the E string (low)?

Alright first off: Have a Squier Strat that I'm re-stringing (which isn't a problem). It has previously been strung with 10, 13, 17 etc. gauge strings (regular slinkys), but I made a mistake the other day. I strung it with 11, 14, 18 etc. gauge strings... i quickly took them off, realizing the nut was gonna get ruined.

So... I'm currently putting on 10s again... am I in the right?

ALSO: I imagine there needs to be some Truss Rod adjustment. I think I can handle it... I have the allen keys to do it. Any advice and help on that? I have no idea what shape the neck and/or truss rod is in, so is there a way to measure?

Hi Chopsuey,

Here is some info re truss rod adjustment that may help you. A small amount of turn can alter things a lot so experiment and leave overnight and check again.

First, hold all strings down at the first and last frets, and see how far the strings are above the middle frets. If they are more than a couple of sheets of paper above, the truss rod needs to be tightened to make the neck more straight. If the strings are down on the frets in the middle of the neck, it is possible that the truss rod needs to be loosened, as the neck could be bowed upward.

If you find that your truss rod needs adjustment, and after you have removed all covers and found the correct wrench, gently tighten to correct downward bow, or gently loosen to correct upward bow. Do not apply force in doing this. If the nut or socket does not turn easily, you have a problem and need professional help.
