What do you guys think of the Squier bass? Is it really that much more horrible than the Fender? Price difference is pretty damn big, and I like Squier Telecasters just as much as Fender Teles.

Sounds like you got a bad Squier Tele my friend. Most Squier Teles
I've played are very well set up. The frets are usually a tad smaller and lower though, you're right about that. Anyway, any experience with a Squier J or P Bass?

I agree wholeheartedly. The thing used to be that the Squiers and even the Epiphones were just pickup swaps away from their cousins, aside from wood. Now the workmanship is admittedly more questionable, or even absent.
I have a Mexi Am. Jazz Std. and that's the lowest I'll go, dammit.

I just ran through about 10 or 12 Precisions at my local music store and didn't like any of them (MIM, MIA, MIJ) BUT the one Squier P that
I tried smoked 'em all and I bought it. Go figure. Planning on changing out the pups, machine heads and probably install a badass but even with these extra costs, the total comes in under a MIM. Once again, setup is very important - all the Fenders were poorly set up and the Squier felt the best of the lot. Let's just hope the neck doesn't go south on me.......

Finally, a breath of fresh air! Maybe it is sharing a love for flight?
Like you, I look for results, not fancy name plates, logos or employees with college degrees. I've been let down too many times in life by brand names that "should" do the job by all of the normal social standards, but which fall far short and leave me with nothing but a pile of fluff and broken promises
My new Squire Telecaster Custom kicks ass, looks, sounds and plays better than the high price spread and cost me $600 less. See what thinking for yourself can do?
Oops, there I go again..

My opinion is that to get a really good, comparable Squier then you'd have to try and get your hands on one of the older models - maybe late 80's up to early 90's; I remember playing the Squier equivalent of a FJB during this time and it was really 'sweet' - very playable, lovely tone etc.
The newer ones are still great value for the money, but they don't seem to me to be of the same quality as the period I mentioned.
Just offering my two pen'orth.
