I appreciate the support, MrStrat, but I don't really NEED it. I know you were talking to Moo and not to me, but now I am talking to anyone who has had the patience to read all the stuff that's gone on in this thread lately. And what I want to know is this:

Does anyone feel (or think) that I have been unfair, or too harsh, or otherwise unkind to MooCows (whose real name seems to be Jon) ???

IF YOU THINK SO, I want to hear from you. Send me e-mail if you don't want to go public. I promise I won't shred you. I will not attack in any way. But if I've done something wrong, I want to know about it.
Otherwise I will never be able to fix it. Sometimes I intend to say one thing and whoever reads me thinks I'm trying to say something else. This is why I'm asking.

IF YOU AGREE WITH ME, please don't post anything about that. I don't want to be [or even appear to be] ganging up on anyone.

Cheers, guys. And write to me if you think you should, please!

There are players like John McLaughlin and Santana who can play super fast.
But they are playing tastful riffs.
Most other shredders are only fast.
No feeling. no technique except for fast.
I suppose it is a great feat to be able to play 16th notes at 600 BPS but it just doesn't do anything for me.

You spelt 'spelt' wrong too.

No problem Jon.

I'm glad we agree on this one.

My compliments, by the way: I have never before seen or heard anyone explaining music theory in terms of human genetics. It's a new multi-disciplinary approach. And I LIKE it.

In my view we all have plenty of access to "experts" who can break up the fabric of our lives into teeny little pieces. Eventually, not too far from now, we will be surrounded by people who know absolutely everything about absolutely nothing.

It's nice to see somebody putting the pieces back together again.

I know this is cross-threading but at least it's not cross-posting. In my opinion we could all do with a bit more cross-threading. That's how information is converted into knowledge. IMHO.

Congratulations, Jon. Every single word in the post I quote below is spelled (or "spelt" absolutely correctly.

And by the way, there's a grain called "spelt" which is similar to wheat. I eat a lot of it because my body cannot digest wheat. I'd tell you more, but that would amount to TOO MUCH cross-threading.

Cheers.

So are Mexico and Spain but they can't understand each other.

I've heard it before but I didn't stop and listen after reading your post.

I couldn't agree more. Some of my favorite players shred for about four bars every forty minutes. I don't hate shredding on principle, or anything. I just get tired really quickly when that's all there is ...

Thanks for your comment, Russ. I think it added a good sense of perspective to this thread.

I played in fusion bands in the 70's & 80's where shredding was mandatory.
I played guitar, bass and sytnh.
My goals were to play like John McGlaughlin and Jaco Pastorius.
I never got to that point but I had fun trying to get there.
