Hi Fellow pickers, I thought I would just do a small article on power chords.

Basically power chords are just the 1st and 5th degrees of the scale, so say a "C" power chord is just the notes C (The 1st or root) and CDEF(G)the 5th so C and G make C5 or C power chord...This is the easiest fingering see example:

Other power chords will add another root note an octave higher in the case of C power chord that would be C G (C)this (C) an octave higher.


An easy way is to use the bass E string for the root note. then just add the 5th which is on the A string 2 frets below...See illustration of fretboard.: I personally find it best to use the barre and then just finger the 5th.

I hope this is helpful *Just remember that power chords are 5th chords so the root note, lets use "G" this time and the 5th of "G" is "D" so G and D make G power chord.
