A good tip with reference to Power chords is as follows: They are normally 2 string chords, the key and the 5th on a standard tuning EADGBE The 5th is always on the next string down 2 frets down so if you had your finger on the bass E string at the 3rd fret (G) and your 3rd finger on the next string down (A) at the 5th fret you have a G power chord and so on, so if you memorise the key notes and then apply this formula its easy to finger power chords...I personally use a Barre on the key note.

You can of course also use open strings so for E5 (Power Chord) open E and and "B" second fret (A) string thats E5 or E power chord.
