Just put a SDQP-3 on my P-bass but don't know how close to the strings it should be.
Is there a guide somewhere?

I put one of those into my P-bass a few months back. For what it's worth, when I press down at the 20th fret, there's about 3/16" between string and pole piece, works good for me. Personally, I like to err on the side of slightly lower output and keep that distance a little greater than some might -- in my experience, it's easy to hear the weird, warbling, muting effect that too-high pickups cause, but it's harder to hear loss of output caused by too-low pickups. To experiment, crank 'em down low and gradually raise them until you get to a point where when you fret at the 20th fret, you can hear the tone being muted or just plain sounding weird, and then lower them just a bit from there. Be sure to test with all four strings, and remember, the distance won't be the same on all strings -- adjust for even response from all four. If you find that you absolutely cannot balance all four strings, no matter what you do, the E and A are louder, then that means you have to lower the whole shebang and start over. If you don't have any audible problems, then don't worry about it.

Just a comment....
Closer is not better with passives as you stand a chance of pushing the magnetic field above the optimum point...ie above the string instead of through it.
Actives have a very weak field so closer is better.
It's a matter of tweaking until you feel happy with the results.

Start with it too close. Hold one string down at the highest fret and pluck.
You will hear a warbling sound. Screw the corresponding pickup height screw in a quarter turn at a time until the warbling goes away. Do this for all strings. Now find the quietest string and screw the other screws in until all strings are equal volume.

Put it as close as you can.It will give you a nice strong output to your amp.I have mine so close that my plucking fingers touch the pickup cover.
