I am considering Ebaying a bass. I have stumbled across a bass I think I would like for a low enough price to Ebay. However, it comes configured with a P J pickups instead of the stand Js I think I would normally go for.
I know this is a subjective question, but what will a P pickup do in the neck position different from a J pickup?
For reference, I play a Jazz Bass with both pickups at full volume. Every now and then I favor the bridge.

Of course, it's subject to preference and taste, but I think you will like the flexibility of the p pickup in the neck position. Adding just a little will "round out" your tone. I have since moved to a Jazz bass configuration, but my next bass will be a return to the P J setup.

This is something I've been thinking about lately, because i love my jazz basses, but would also like to have a P sound available.... I just put some bartolinis in a Jazz i threw together, and it seems to me that the neck pickup soloed has quite a bit of that P growl and thunder, but the bridge pickup soloed doesn't quite turn me on like other pu's there have .... I guess i like the single coil sound in the bridge when soloed .. but still, together they're really quite nice...
This is a fretted jazz i threw together from bargain bin parts that have collected over that past few months. The body is extremely light alder, very plain looking wood, but the bottom that comes from this bass is wonderful. I was aiming mainly to be able to get that "P" sound with some "J" attack options, so I'm quite pleased with the results....( as well as the minimal capital outlay)

One thing I noticed on my first PJ is that the quality of the phase cancellation thing between the two pickups when played together is different on the E and A than on the D and G. Not annoying to me but it might be to someone else.
It will probably take a while for me to find the strings that produce a satisfactory P sound while getting a satisfactory J blend and J bridge sound. Right now I'm accepting some compromise.
After playing P only for a while, then building a PJ, I'm starting to think
I might need a regular J. It may even be that the PJ will go away after a while leaving me with just a P and a J.
