Hey, I play in a traveling worship band called Rising Up and we do alot of the same type of hillsong/tomlin stuff. I have a good sized pedal board that has my Line 6 pod 2.o and a four button switched incooperated into it.
I pretty much just use differing levels of distortion and delay. I use a lot of clean tones with delays for a typical U2 'wash' as a sonic blanket. Then i'll switch to settings on the POD for more amounts of distortion. I use a lot of compression for sustain in leads both distorted and clean.
I have found, due to a very limited budget, that i spend more time use the pickup selector and tone knob on the guitar than i do working with the pedals.
You gotta start with a good clean tone, and a good rock tone. Everything after that is just icing on the cake.
I do use a bit of tremolo on some song endings. Wah is a great tool as well. I typically do not use flanger, chorus, or phaser, or rotovibe. The team i play on has another guitar player and two piano/keyboard players... its real easy to get lost in the mix with modulator these effects so I try to stick out by avoiding them.
I rencently added a Ibanez TS-9 that I use on top of my clean tone for a different type of overdrive seperate from my rock distortion.
Blah blah blah... you get the idea. When in doubt, keep it simple.
