What should the pickup height be on my stock MIM Fender Precision?
I'm looking for a traditional "tuned bass drum" sound.
It takes two to make a marriage a success and only one to make it a failure.

That sound will probably not come from pickup height adjustment. Try
Pyramid, LaBella, or Thomastik-Infeld flatwound strings (the last two brands will take some breaking in before they sound like you want them to). You might also want to experiment with a string mute (see the Carol Kaye site for info on making a felt mute) or with left and right hand muting techniques.

Hold the string(s) down on the last (21st?) fret. The string should remain clear of the pickup, no matter how you play it. Each half of a Precision
Bass pickup should sit roughly parallel to the two strings it services:
usually higher towards the inside and lower towards the outside.
You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.
