I'm on the hunt for a bass combo that would give a warm and fat bass tone, mainly for playing covers of 70's soul, funk, and disco. (My bass is a Precision strung with flats.)

Ampeg currently offers the all-tube 100w B15-R, the "reissue" of the old flip-top combo and uses a quartet of 6L6 tubes. Anyone have any experience with this amp? I'm wondering how 6L6 tubes would sound in a bass amp? Aren't 6550 tubes normally used in tube bass amps?

thanks!
I wanted to do something nice so I bought my mother-in-law a chair. Now they won't let me plug it in.

The old Fender Bassman heads were all either 2x 6L6GC or 4x 6L6GC. I may be in the minority, but I like the way they sound with bass. The hard part is power - a pair isgood for 50 watts, a quad is worth about 100 watts. That is a fairly small amount of power for today's inefficient (on purpose) bass cabinets and generally loud volume levels. But the tone is quite good.

The 6550's are used because you can get more power from them. A pair of 6550's is good for about 70-100 watts. Tone is good again. KT-88's the same deal. Try an old Sunn S200 head with 4x KT-88/6550 and there's a slammin' good sounding bass amp.
