FUN AS HELL! I love it!

Fat to Thin: D G D G B D
Basically like holding an A, a whole step down.
I do a lot of Stones in it; Brown Sugar, Happy, Honky Tonk Women. Also, Bad to the Bone by Thorogood, and some Black Crowes.
One of my favorites that I adapted to open G is `Man Of Constant Sorrow` from the `O` Brother Where Art Though` soundtrack. The movie version is in Drop D tuning, D A D G B E, with the chords D A and G. I changed it to open G, and play it in G, so, G D and C. It allows me to do a lot of slide etc.

This is pretty much the only way to play most Stones` songs so they sound right. If you want to sound absolutely authentic, lose the low D string and set it up on a Tele. I set up an old MIM Tele like this years ago, and it`s so much fun I never changed it back.
I`m also a big Black Crows fan. What songs play off an open G?

and a lot of their memorable riffs come from open G (Start Me Up, Brown Sugar) but the open G songs are just a fraction of the song book.
BTW, two cool Stones open E songs: Gimme Shelter and You Can`t Alway Get(capoed at the 8th)
BLACK CROWES IN OPEN G Jealous Again Twice As Hard Sister Luck Seeing Things Hard To Handle Thick `n Thin Struttin` Blues Stare It Cold
BLACK CROWES IN OPEN E Could I`ve Been So Blind She Talks To Angels
Of course most of the leads are played in standard tuning, though most of the outro riffs in Jealous Again can be played on open G.

I have used D tunings different ways... from 6th to 1st string...
DGDGGD...indian raga/country(banjoor mandolin)/general doodling (note..you can also drop the 2nd string to a D and have double D`s on the top..and as we know, double D`s on top... rock) from 6th to 1st string... DADGBD...general playing and doodling...(think Suite Judy Blue Eyes) from 6th to 1st....DADF#AD...basically an open E tuning, dropped a whole step..lots of slide players use this so they can capo up to E and when they do a song in D, they can drop to that low slide range. These are all I can think of , off the top of my head. Its 7:30 in the AM and I am still working on the first cup of Java...hope this gives you something new to play around with and opens some doors for you.

true Richards fan, you`ll find that many tunes on his CDs are in open G.
And thanks for the list of BC songs. I started playing these songs in my head as soon as I saw your list, and it makes a lot more sense than trying to play these any other way. I like the Black Crows as their sound is very distinct, and they are, IMO, a great band. But, when you think about it, there`s a lot of Stone`s influence in there.

If you hit any tough spots on the Crowes tunes, let me know. I have the tab book to the first album.
