hi, anyone out there has an idea on how to get rid of that awful gating effect on the blue box? it is similar to the tone "dying" with eg. the ibanez standard fuzz. now - is it really a gate (as some people mention on other threads) or is it a characteristic of the fuzz? i believe it must be some kind of gate, since it really reacts to the level of input (above treshold: off, below: tone dies). if its just a few components in the circuit (must be) which cause this behavior, does anyone know what & where they are & how to bypass them?
i believe the mod should make for a far more musical effect - i mean:
if i play through a cranked marshall i'd like to hear sussstaaaaainnnnnn..

clean boost: right! i only increased the gain a bit (no distortion to the signal). compression: dang! just sold my compressor (found it useless, now i might miss it). just for research, i put a wah & fuzz in FRONT of it. total freaking mess. sounded like my atari console (asteroids or such). anybody knows the live recording of "severed lips" by dinosaur jr? it's this mellow countryesque tune, and after the break mascis hits the blue box and the solo sounds so MASSIVE.
it's giving me the shivers just to think of it at this very moment.

hi jimmy, i also found that it works best with a single coil neck pickup, and tracking gets better with the tone control rolled down.
i figure that it's easier for the circuit to track (analize the basic note) if less harmonics are input. this is also valid for all octavia-like stompboxes i tried. i read stuff about pitch shifting which also points into that direction. about the gating issue: as soon as i find some mod, i'll send you a mail. cheers, michael

hi bill, your guess why they might have included the gate makes sense
- but still, i'd rather accept some glitches than hitting a string and nothing coming out of the thing. i mean, actually it's not a big problem, but i'd like to have a bluebox w/o gate. just because i want it. the other night i tried to solve the problem by raising the input to the bluebox by putting an overdriver (just to increase the gain a tiny bit) in front of it, since i figured: if it's a gate, i just have to get above treshold and since those ole singlecoils don't deliver massive output i'll have to increase gain. after tweaking for a while, i felt things got better but then again the bluebox didn't get any louder than the (clean) signal it was already fed since it doesn't have huge gain. what a hassle.
jimmy: still couldn't find any mod, and if noone in this group seems to know about a mod, i guess we'll have to live with it as is...
still, it's a pretty much fun box.
