I was playing through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe in a store today and found it to be a very nice sounding clean amp with decent reverb. Distortion was a bit over the top for my tastes. I realize that these PCB amps are not easy to modify but has anyone modified the HRD for more headroom and less buzzy distortion?
One important mod would be getting rid of the cheap 12" speaker they have in there...Decent tubes would probably help too. Anyone know if there`s a bias pot in this amp?

that a better speaker and preamp tubes work wonders.
As I recall, you aren`t real crazy about Weber speakers. I`ve heard really good things about his California 12", though. Even the cheap one (around $60, if I recall correctly).

to spec and pay for. They`ll build as good a speaker as can be built anywhere in the world. They can even build great speakers and have.
That isn`t what Fender orders from them.

We used Eminence "woofers. " I couldn`t believe how small the magnets and coils were. Even on the 18"s. Then we started building prototypes for a higher end line of cabs. The Eminence "woofers" we used in those were amazing. The entire warehouse could be filled with clear sound with a prototype (loaded with a nice horn too.) It became clear to me that, as stated above, they "can build ANY speaker you are willing to spec and pay for." Unfortunately, I left the DJ equip company too soon after the prototype to get my hands on a pair (at cost.) I did get a wireless guitar sys for $60. or so and it still works great.

the PCB. WHich, in the case of Fender`s, has been known to have the parts fall off the PCB, due to lack of quality soldering, and thin leads in a physical vibration environment.
However, an having a PCB in it, NEVER stopped you from performing and modifications to it.
Polished turds for tubes have little to no headroom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
