I think MySpace is a wonderful tool for artists, if used correctly. You can post blog posts that do you good as far as publicity and search engines go, you can also post a lot of information about your inspirations, biography, band members and what ever else you want, including, several tracks of your album to wet your potential listeners appetites.

If you don’t want people going back to your MySpace page to listen to your music there instead of buying it you can post incomplete tracks - the possibilities are endless.
What brought all this on you ask?
Well, on Sixeyes I read about a band just about to release there Debut Album called The Phantom Band. They sound really interesting and based on the MP3 posted by Alan, They fit my taste to a tee - except I won’t buy an album based on one song that I like. I will listen to several, or excerpts form several, and then go ahead and purchase. So over I popped to their MySpace page only to discover that there was no link to music - just a link to Chemikal Underground Site,(the Label ) Where you can pre order The Phantoms Album.
Personal, and I say this sadly, I will pass. I find it rude and aggressive marketing that is not very effective with me.

Update - the do have a website, that has 2 tracks posted, the site doesn’t work on firefox, and I have been waiting for one of the tracks to load on the explorer for at least five minutes….Frown

Update 2 - Ignore this whole post (at least the bitching about their MySpace page - Do not go to their page with Firefox - use IE and all problems will be solved - although this is a bit surprising since I have never run into this incompatibility before) - as far as there music goes - I stick with my first impression - Not a band to be ingored at all. Finally, some music that is up there with PJ harvey,  Tom Waites Nick Cave and the rest of the great and dark artists. Finally some music that doesn’t feel as shallow as a puddle, and layered enough to be heard again and again!! (Island killed me completely)
