I got tired of people complaining that my sound is either "in their face" or "can't hear it".
So I removed the back of the cabinet and the jack plate and made a new half back from half inch plywood.
I don't want to have to hang blankets over my cabinet or aim it away from the audience.
I had no idea of what to expect from the finished product.
I gigged with it last night and it sounded great.
No longer directional.
I think I may have lost a little volume but not much.
The biggest changes in sound were that it cut the mids considerably.
But the bass and treble were increased.
With it closed I had little control over my tone.
It was either heavy on midrange or muddy when I turned the tone control on the guitar to bass.
But this is the Marshall sound.
With the back half open I can now go from Fender twang to growling bass with a turn of the tone turn knob on the guitar.
I was using a 1989 50 watt JCM 900 (EL-34's) Dual reverb.
Best this amp ever sounded.
We play fairly loud and I had it cranked to max much of the time.
With the amp volume/gain down it sounds very much like an older Fender
Twin.
I am using a 1936 cabinet.
2X12, 75 watt Celestions.
I like the new sound so much that I am considering getting a second
1936 cabinet and opening the back.
I wonder why Marshall never thought of this.
I did not cut the original back.
I made a new one half the size of the original with half inch plywood.

Remember that it is not totally open.
The top half is covered.
There was no loss in the bottom end which surprised me.
And when pushing it, it still has the Marshall sound.
A friend has a Marshall combo amp that sounds thin and buzzy in comparison.
After doing this mod I don't see any advantage to having completely closed cabinets unless you are using a full stack in a stadium.
