I am not quite clear on the difference, and would appreciate and explanation.

Hi Lila, The DFX is a combo amp (Like the one in my picture) in other words all in one whilst the HFX is a piggy back unit and speaker cab. If you go to Marshal's site and click on both and then specs you will be able to determine if there are any other differences.
