A job often overlooked is stretching new strings when you put them on, or old ones that have been removed and put back for some reason.

Tune to concert pitch and starting with the bass "E" string put your fingers under the string, with your thumb on top of the string a couple of inches ahead, pull up with the fingers and press down with the thumb moving along the string towards the nut. You will find when you play the string after this it will be out of concert pitch, retune to concert and do it again and again until the string after the stretching remains in pitch....move across the strings A D G B E Now your strings should stay in tune, when you play.
