There are quite a few tube amp kits, but are there any solid state amp kits?

It would be cool to have a head that can put out enough clean power to go just beyond home audio levels for use with effects processors etc...

yeah, that one does look easy, did you do the little gem or the mk2? how loud does it get and stay clean? Enough to accompany unmiked vocals?

With solid state you do NOT want low power. Typical SS power amps sound like
CRAP when they distort. Even the ones designed to mimic a tube amp fall way short, IMHO.

If you plan to use SS, do not rely on it for tone, and use as many watts as you can for headroom. Rely on an effects unit or tube preamp for tone.

Wow, that actually sounds fairly decent!

I did the basic Little Gem, and yes, it is loud enough to accompany unmiked vocals. I suspect that the volume is directly related to the speaker and cab though, so your mileage may vary.

I just built one actually. I found the schematic and sound clip on http://www.runoffgroove.com. The project is called the Little Gem. No kit though - I just bought the parts I needed and threw it together. It is very simple, inexpensive and easy to build, and the sound is pretty cool for clean to gritty. No high gain available though - you'll need a pedal for that. Listen to the clip and see if you like it. Mine came out sounding pretty similar, although I play it through a 1x12 open back, so I don't get the same bottom that the clip exhibits (he used a 2x12 closed back probably).
