I'm looking for an inexpensive new electric guitar. I realize that, as a beginner, no guitar is going to make me sound great at this point, but I would like a guitar that I will still be happy with in a couple years when
I'm (hopefully) a decent guitar player. I enjoy playing a wide variety of music, so versatility is important to me. I like a very clean sound, and don't want any buzzing in the strings. The low-E string on the crappy guitar I've been borrowing buzzes so much it's unplayable. Also, I'd like a guitar that stays in tune.

Here are some guitars I've found locally, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada:

Peavey Raptor Plus EXP - $230...I'm told that the newest ones are as good as the Predators. Is this true?

Peavey Predator - $420 for the only one I've found in town down from a sticker price of $599..is this reasonable? (just out of my price range, but
I've heard good things about this....nobody seems to stock them anymore, but some local websites accessed via Peavey's website list Predator Plus EXPs at $269 CAD. I'm not sure that they are still available.)

Austin- a couple local shops stock these. They are inexpensive ($250ish), are nicely finished, and sound good to my ears. Does anyone know much about these guitars, quality-wise?

Epiphone- not sure the exact model, but I know it's an SG...The guitar looks great, and I'm led to believe it has very good electronics. The guitar and each of the 2 humbuckers sport the Gibson name, but I'm told that this simply means that they meet Gibson's specs, not that they were produced in
North America by Gibson.
This one was $390. Any opinions on how this would compare to a Peavey
Predator?

Fender Squier- all different models starting at about $220...both Strat and
Les Paul style. How does this stack up against the Peavey Raptor Plus EXP and the Austin line of low-end guitars?

Thanks so much for your input,

Those sound like many practically no-name guitars that sell at such prices. Usually their good looks are deceiving.

This sounds like the G400, with the waxed (I think) pickups. A solid good guitar, though the pickups are a bit muddy, but overall a very good value at this price range.

I have played lots of Squiers, and all were disappointing. I have read that the Tele Squiers are much better, but haven't tried them myself.

At this price range, check the Yamaha Pacifica models, MusicMan OLP, also www.musicyo.com

I haven't tried the Peavey, so no comment on them.
