I will keep to the simplest method for this explaination and of course there are other methods. Tuners, Harmonics etc string gauge,
high action, worn frets, excessive relief etc.all play a part.
Firstly, tune the guitar. Now starting with Treble "E" play the string open and then fretted at the 12th fret. If the fretted note sounds flat against the open string then move the bridge forward towards the nut, if sharp then backwards, just a couple of turns is all that is needed, sometimes you have to move back and forward until pitch is obtained.
You will get better at it as you do this over the years.
