What type of music are you going to be playing? Metal, Classic Rock, Country, Opera (just kidding about the opera. I personal play soft classic rock like Simple Man, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Maggie May, etc.

Not so much metal but a bit of classic rock (the beatles), a bit of punk (the pixies, the jam) and some more modern music (the arctic monkeys, rhcp)

The bands in brackets were just to give you some sort of idea of what we want to play, however our music abilities are limited and we cannot play anything too difficult.

From my experience the song selection goes with the age of the people you think you'll be intertaining and the type of clubs. Everyone likes classic rock and the classic rock bands are in demand. I would recommend songs from the below artists;
Stones
Skynyrd
Doors
Eagles (the rock style not the country)
Kiss
Dobbie Brothers
James Taylor
Rod Steward
Beatles are good too
also include some one hit wonders....
Of the above I would select their best songs for both fast and slow dancing. However, I would extend the number of songs to about 15 - 20 as that is the number you can expect to play over a 3 hour gig with 10 - 15 minutes breaks included.
Good Luck,
