How many of you are self taught? are you self taught from day one or from certain point? I am asking because I am not happy with the progress I am making with my teacher and was wondering if it would be possible to make real progress on my own, and how?

Amen.... I am self taught and understand what you are going through. You know what you want to learn and the instructor is not giving it to you. However, you do need a mentor to ask questions to as far as guitar techniques and questions about the songs you want to learn. I started out with a guitar chord chart and the chords and lyrics of the songs I wanted to learn. Help is always needed, especially when you start strumming with the chords as there are strum patterns for each song. Find someone (experienced guitarist) that can help you with them and reading guitar tabs and you should be fine.
Good Luck,
