I have an old, well sorta 15 year old epiphone les paul. I think the pic ups were always the weakest link and I`m gonna replace them with p-90`s for clarity. I`ll change the rest of the electronics as well. That`s pretty straight forward.
What I want to know is are there any reasonable ways to up grade the tuners? They`re the aul` strip the wood screw on the back, heavy strings make em twist variety. Doesn`t look good, doesn`t function well. It`s a poor design if you ask me. It cant support heavy strings. Can anything be done?

I don`t know specifically what kind of tuners you have on this older model. But I have upgraded tuners on my 3 Epiphones recently. Two were recent model Les Pauls (a Junior and a 56 Goldtop), and the third was `64 Coronet. Each had different tuners, and I was able to do them all without a problem. Send a link to a picture of your tuners, and maybe I can recommend the replacements. Or just go to http://www.allparts.com and http://www.wdmusic.com and see what they have that looks the same. All Parts sells the Gotoh tuners, which are not always direct replacements (you might need to route the post hole a little bit - they sell the tool), but they are a good reasonably priced upgrade. W.D. sells Klusons, and if you are replacing Klusons, they should fit perfectly with no mods. Of course Grovers or other high quality rotory tuners are always an option, but a little more work is needed since they are designed differently than most stock tuners (bigger post hole and different screw locations). If doing it yourself scares you, a qualified tech can install tuners pretty cheaply too.

They appear to be "les paul vintage". I mentioned it was an older guitar thinking things might have changed but it doesn`t look like it has. I suppose my biggest concern is the actual wood it appears to be either dried out or just fragile. So it has a single post, and on the back a couple of screws directly into the wood. That`s a cool site btw thanks
