Oftentimes even the word Intonation will put new players off....However, I will endevour to explain the process as simple as I can. It really means being in tune all over the fretboard, If it isn't e.g. some chords will sound in tune whilst others do not, if you tune the ones sounding out the others will then sound out. The first thing we need to know to set the intonation is our guitar's "Scale" length. This is determined by measuring from the nut (Fretboard side) to the top and middle of the 12th fret then double that measurement to obtain your guitars scale size. My Telecaster is 12 3/4" to the 12th fret and therefore the scale is 2X 123/4" 25,1/2"

So a good place to start setting intonation is at scale e.g. (Lets use my scale of 25,1/2 From the top of the 12th fret measure
half this amount 12,3/4" or whatever your distance is on your guitar to the bridge Here is where the middle of the bridge at the treble "E" should be. String gauge etc play a part and so there are many factors involved, we wont go into that as I would like to keep it simple. After moving the bridge (If you have to) so that the middle and top are at 123/.4" from the top of the 12th fret Then move each saddle backwards by the amount of difference in string gauge from the next string e.g. if treble E is 9 and B is 11 then move the saddle carrying the B string 2 thou back from the E. and so on across B 11 if G is 22 then move that back 11 thou and so on. Once having done that at least you will be in the correct area to start fine tuning.

I will start part 2 as a new topic so as not to get to lengthy.
