Just saw the FZ-3 in a music shop today for $50 but didn`t get to try it. I`ve got an old Sovtek Big Muff (the big green one), and I`ve been kind of disappointed with it. I love Big Muffs on records, but this one`s pretty muddy when playing rhythm and lacks a little bit of definition and bite for leads. I mostly play a Fat Telecaster, and I`d like to find something that would give me a nice thick crunch when playing riffs and chords, to go with a nice lead tone for fuzzed out solos, and hopefully not take up as much space on the pedal board while it`s doing it. Something like a cross between Jimi Hendrix and the Smashing Pumpkins, with a little room left to experiment with wild noise. If it could clean up like a thick overdrive on the lower settings, all the better. So is the FZ-3 worth checking out? The Harmony-Central reviews are mostly positive, but I`m not sure if it`s what I want.

Definitely go for the Boss FZ-3 if you want some Hendrix sounds. The FZ-3 is a good silicon transistored fuzz made of discrete components (no ICs). I also have an old Big Muff Pi. They`re significantly different from one another soundwise, IMO. -jan

Far and away the greatest fuzz pedal is the Boss Hyper Fuzz FZ-2. Don`t bother with the FZ-3, even though it`s a solid pedal with a simple interface, it doesn`t have the range you get with the FZ-2. People who use the FZ-2 are the guys from Korn and James Iha from the former Smashing Pumpkins. It`s worth searching for. The FZ-2 is one of the greatest pawnshop gems, where as you can find FZ-3`s just about anywhere.
Perhaps, after all, America never has been discovered. I myself would say that it had merely been detected.
