I like the fenders and G&Ls. Those all have bolt on necks.
Carvin has guitars that have necks integral part of the body.
Is that a construction technique that makes a difference in the sound, quality of guitar?
Or should I not care?

All three companies make excellent guitars, but I'd be less likely to get a
Carvin than the others. The problem with Carvin is that they make the guitar when you order it, thus ruling out the possibility of trying the exact guitar out until it is finished. At least with G&L, Music Man, or
Fender you can play the actual guitars at the store before deciding which one you want to take home.
As for set necks or bolt-on, I've got a couple of each. It shouldn't matter, as long as the guitar is well constructed of quality wood. It doesn't make that much of a difference to sustain. If you want longer sustain, just stick a compressor on it.

The most fundamental fact about the ideas of the political left is that they do not work. Therefore we should not be surprised to find the left concentrated in institutions where ideas do not have to work in order to survive.

Neck through and set neck designs are known for better sustain than the bolt ons, and this is, for the most part, true. (For the sake of simplicity, I'll incorporate set necks as part of the neck throughs). This does not have much to do with the quality of the guitar. one of the biggest points between the two (bolt on and neck through) is that if there is ever a problem with the neck, the bolt on can be worked on or replaced easier. There are the pluses and minuses for each design, and people have their own opinions on each.
Personally, all of my electric guitars are bolt-ons. I didn't plan it that way, or make it a point ... it just worked out that way. Mostly because of the way the guitars played and felt in my hands. That's what it should really boil down to. Because that's all that really matters ... the playability and the sound you get.
But I definitely want a Les Paul sooner or later.
