Okay so I`m thinking for those rock distortions my DS-1 isn`t exactly what I`m looking for. I like it for some stuff but not all. I was thinking of either a Rat or Big Muff and wanted some opinions from the peanut gallery here. By the way I ended picking up a DOD Grunge pedal for the over the top gain sounds upon recommendations from this group. young...

I wish I had a Big Muff to compare it to...I have a Grunge and a Rat, and love them both. Different sounds, the grunge is great when you want to split some eardrums or really want to blow over the top type of distortion The Rat is definitely more subtle. I`m curious what the Big Muff can do that the RAt and Grunge can`t do.

I don`t really like the Big Muff sound for guitar, but I think it`s a nifty bass effect. The Rat is much more versatile, IMO.
I love argument, I love debate. I don't expect anyone just to sit there and agree with me, that's not their job.

I wish I had not sold my "Grunge". I have a ProCo Rat, but the grunge is nice too. Having both is a good idea. I guess if I come across another "Grunge" at a good price when I have a few extra bucks in my pocket, I will buy it.
I met in the street a very poor young man who was in love. His hat was old, his coat worn, his cloak was out at the elbows, the water passed through his shoes -- and the stars through his soul.

The Rat and the Big Muff are both great pedals, but they are MILES apart in sound and application. Overall, the Rat is more flexible - the Big Muff is a beast of it`s own, though, and if you want that sound there are few alternatives - I have a Big Muff, I`ve never gotten a chance to try the Frantone "The Sweet" but this is alleged to be the best thing out there to get that Muff sound - If I can ever try one I`m pretty sure I`ll own one. The Rat is a very useful pedal - used one in a recording session once and was sold on it - lots of range.
You simply must try them both and decide based on what you play.
Few people think more than two or three times a year. I have made an international reputation for myself by thinking once or twice a week.

You can get them for cheap off of eBay, there are about a dozen for sale right now.

To be honest, I don`t actually own a Big Muff, but I have used them enough to have a good understand of what they are capable of.
What kind of tone are you looking for? If you want a Smashing Pumpkins super saturated distortion/fuzz sound then a Big Muff would be what you are looking for. Personally I like it for lead work, but I am not as crazy about it for chords. I think it can sound muddy.
If you are looking for a more "natural" overdriven/distorted amp sound then the Rat could be what you are looking for. When I think Rat I think lots of 70s hard rock - cranked marshalls. I have a new Vintage Rat and its one of the pedals that gets the most use (that my ZVex SuperHardOn and Line6Delay).
As someone has mentioned previously - the Rat has more range than a Big Muff. Ultimately I would urge you to try them, and others, out before you buy.
