I've got a 1989 (I'm pretty sure) made in Japan Fender Strat with all original parts in near mint condition that I'm thinking of upgrading and was just wondering what it's worth.

I've heard they go in the mid $300's, which is a bit more than they listed for when new, but they may be appreciating. Considering they were so cheap, yet so well made, it's hard to know exactly how many "original" MIJ Strats are still out there, as I'm sure many were modified shortly after they were purchased.
I do not want a friend who smiles when I smile, who weeps when I weep, for my shadow in the pool can do better than that.

Yes, thanks, very sound advice. I was thinking about getting another guitar next year (I've had a bad case of G.A.S. lately) so perhaps that's the route I'll take.

Actully I'm thinking of trying something besides a Strat though so perhaps
I can kill two birds with one stone and get something that's got a fatter sound by default.

Yes, I found a website that gave a date range of 84-87 for the serial number after I posted this. I like the guitar quite a bit, I guess I got lucky because I knew nothing at all about it when I purchased it some 14 odd years ago. I'm thinking it was close to $400 new with a fender hard case but my memory could be off by a few.

I think I may put a humbucker on the bridge to fatten it up a bit, plus add a couple more springs to the tremelo to help keep it in tune a little better.

Check ebay and see what similar models are selling for. Also check local music stores. I'm in Atlanta and those usually sell for around $250-400 depending on the condition.
I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My own wisdom, and that of all about me, seemed insufficient for the day.
